3 days in Mykonos

When you think of Greece it’s either Mykonos or Santorini that comes to mind, or perhaps it’s both. As we traveled through Greece, island hopping, Mykonos was on the top of our list. Due to limited time, we only spent 3 days in Mykonos but it was enough to fall in love!

Mykonos was actually the last stop in our island hopping tour before we made our way to the mainland. We arrived at about midday by ferry. I have to say that for all of the bad reviews I had read about the ferries in Greece we had nothing but great experiences.

We were picked up by our hotel Dimele Rooms & Studios and brought to check-in. We dropped our stuff and headed right out to start exploring the beautiful city of Mykonos old town.

What to see and do

I’m going, to be honest here. Unlike our time in Santorini, we didn’t move too much in Mykonos. While we did explore the old town extensively and a little bit beyond, we decided that we’d rather relax. While 3 days in Mykonos sounds like a lot, I could have spent the whole time wandering the old town and not have gotten bored.

Mykonos windmills

Probably the most famous spot in all of Mykonos. You see those windmills in almost every photo of Mykonos. This was probably the biggest disappointment. I mean, the windmills were kind of cool but they were basically in the middle of a parking lot surrounded by nothing but gravel sand. I know, sorry to disappoint.

Little Venice

The second most popular, and my personal favourite, spot in Mykonos is Little Venice. Now this place actually lives up to its hype. There are a number of bars located right on the water which have beautiful views of not only the windmills but other buildings and the water. I would highly recommend carving out some hours in your day to stay for a drink. Just be prepared to pay top dollar for them.

Paraportiani Orthodox Chuch

This beautiful church set right in the heart of Mykonos Old Town was a beautiful sight. It’s actually made up of 5 churches all together and was created in the 17th century! There are so many different churches to explore during your 3 days in Mykonos but this is one of the most popular spots

Shopping in Mykonos

If you have money to spare, unlike us, Mykonos has some of the best shopping in Greece. Wandering through the Old town you’ll find tons of brand names and even local shops to buy anything your heart desires.

Old Port

Our other favourite place to grab a drink was the Old Port. We actually stopped here a couple of times because it was so pleasant. It’s also a great place to sit and watch the sunset if you can get a good spot. If you find yourself looking for a sit-down breakfast, the Old Port has quite a few options for this as well.

Venture to Paradise Beach

One morning we decided to take the local bus to Paradise Beach. As we’re not really big partiers, staying into the evening wasn’t something that particularly appealed to us. Instead, we left just after lunchtime. I will say I can understand why so many people love the area. The dive bars and sprawling beach would be enough to entice any partygoer.

180 Degrees

If you’re looking to experience the more bougie side of Mykonos (at a relatively reasonable price) then this is the place to do it. Especially at sunset. It’s 10 Euro per person to get in but you can use that money towards your drinks, it’s essentially their way of guaranteeing that you’ll spend some money. I can’t say it was the best place I’ve ever dined at, they didn’t treat you very well if they didn’t think you had money but the view was spectacular so that made it worth it.

Where to stay

We had such a hard time deciding where we were going to stay during our 3 days in Mykonos. There are so many options. In the end, we decided to stay just slightly out of the old town but still a 5-minute walk. Dimele rooms and suites was the best option for us.

Luxury: Absolut Mykonos – the stunning pools, free breakfast and great location make this hotel a must stay if you’re looking to splurge a little on your stay.

Mid-Range: Dimele Room & Suites – I’m so happy with our choice to stay here. Not only was it reasonable in price but the bed was super comfortable and we had a view of the windmills right from our balcony.

Budget: Hotel Despotiko – from what I’ve seen, this is the best option you’re going to get right in the old town of Mykonos. It gets great reviews as well.
