European Christmas

For those of you who don’t follow me on Instagram or Twitter, may not know that I’ve been spending my Christmas vacation in Europe. While the main reason for the trip was to spend Christmas with Ben’s family, I also have a goal to visit 30 countries before I’m 30. So, when we decided to make the trek to England to celebrate Boxing day with my new English family, we also decided to tack on another two countries for my first European Christmas.

Bruges Belgium

Here’s the breakdown

Vacation days used: 6

Total days away: 12

Countries visited: England, Belgium, Netherlands

Cities visited: Billericay, Ghent, Bruges, Ypes, Brussels, Amsterdam

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1-3: Billericay, England

On Boxing Day we arrived first thing in the morning into Gatwick airport. The flight we took was a Red Eye with Air Transat. Now typically I am a huge fan of Air Transat as I’ve normally ever been on their newer fleets but for whatever reason on Christmas night we we boarded the plane it was an old one, with no Tv’s, smaller seats, and a somewhat more unpleasant flight crew. I also got stuck in front of a horrible mother-daughter pair who I quite literally almost got in a fist fight with (I’m not proud of the few choice words that were sent back and forth between us). Needless to say we arrived beyond exhausted and a bit grumpy. All that changed when we saw Mr. & Mrs. H at the airport though. We spent the rest of the days with family and friends making the most of our time there.

Billericay England

Day 4: Brussels, Belgium

We woke up early on Day 4 to start the drive into Brussels. It was actually a lot longer of a process than I would have expected. Upon reaching the English Channel we drove right onto the train that then took us under water (bit of a weird experience). From there it was about a 2.5 hour drive into Brussels. Brussels was much different than I thought it was going to be, it was beautiful, spacious, and not that busy. I did however feel a bit unsafe there given that the day we were there they foiled a New Years Eve terrorist attack.

Brussels Belgium

Day 5-6: Amsterdam, Netherlands.

This seemed like a much better idea at the time than it was. Unless you’re a twenty-something year old male looking to get messed up for New Years Eve, I would recommend skipping the city to ring in the new year. Everything else about the city I loved. We did everything I wanted to do as well in two days despite the lines and amount of people that had come into the city for the holiday. I couldn’t believe how unique and well maintained all of the buildings were lined up in rows all along the canals. Amsterdam was very easily done in two days.

Canal Bicycle Amsterdam

Day 7 Ghent, Belgium

The drive from Amsterdam to Ghent is a fairly quick one, just over an hour along the highways. Because Ghent is such a small city you can easily do it in a couple of hours like we did. The Christmas markets were still up and beautiful to walk around, especially at night. The historical centre of the city is walkable in two hours if you really take your time. There is so much history in this little town and definitely worth a stop in.

Ghent Belgium

Day 8: Ypres, Belgium

Ypres may seem like a bit of a strange destination along this trip but if you’re anything like me and a lover of history – especially World War one, than I would recommend a stop here. There are cemetery’s on almost every corner from fallen soldiers in the war and quite a few museums. I would definitely recomment Tyne Cot, Menin Gate and Vancouver Corner. The city of Ypres is very quaint as well. I couldn’t help but feel a bit haunted walking the streets at night.Β

Ypres Belgium

Day 9: Bruges, Belgium

Our last stop on my first European Christmas was this quaint city, and definitely my favourite along the trip. The buildings and streets seem as if they’ve been frozen in time. Even the simplest alleyway seems magical. Of course we had to check out the main square and the 2be bridge for the iconic snapshots. The weather was really horrible our whole stay, I would certainly like to come back to experience the city in nicer weather!

Bruges Belgium

Day 10: Billericay, England

Our last official day on the trip was spent saying our goodbyes to family and a few friends before travelling back home. It was also spent relaxing, which was much needed after our whirlwind tour for my first European Christmas. Billericay is a small town, about 30 minutes from London. It’s a typical English town with a high street and some great pubs.

Day 11: Home

All in all it was an amazing and successful trip. I was completely spoiled with not one but two Christmas’, 5 new cities and 2 new countries under my belt. This will be a tough Christmas to live up to!

  1. Looks like you had a great holiday season! Amsterdam has never been very high on my list in terms of Christmas season, but Belgium is right up there with Austria and Germany.

  2. You visited some of my favourite bits of Europe! I lived in Brussels for almost 2 years and Ghent, Bruges and Amsterdam were among my most usual day trips from there. I understand you not feeling safe in Brussels, considering the latest events, but I am very attached to the city and am happy to know you liked in nonetheless. Your flight sounds awful, I hope the way back was more relaxing!

  3. Great trip. Belgium and the Netherlands are such small countries that you can just visit one town, go to another, and come back in one day. But that may not be enough to explore the beauties they hide πŸ™‚

  4. Next time head to Germany and Austria over Christmas. I have never experienced anything quite like it. Then again I have never been to Belgium or the Netherlands and they sound like nice places to visit in the holidays too!

  5. I’m glad you enjoyed your first christmas in Europe. Maybe next time you can come a few days before Christmas when all the Christmas markets are still open. πŸ™‚

  6. They were actually still open in all the cities that I travelled to! It was great and they were beautiful.

  7. Definitely agree! I got a good snapshot in the time I was there but would have loved to spend more time in Belgium.

  8. I would go back to Bruges in a heartbeat! Almost seemed stuck in time. The flight on the way back was much much better thank you πŸ™‚

  9. I’d love to watch a bellly dancing show. It really amazes me how some women can do this hard. I tried it after watching a Youtube video but boy it’s not as easy as it looks!

  10. Great photos! We spend Christmas in Morocco a couple of years ago – probably should have hopped over to Europe instead – way more Christmas spirit over there!

  11. I’ve been loving my European Christmases since moving here 5 years ago! Everywhere here is a dream at Christmastime, especially Germany! But your cities would be wonderful to visit at probably any time of the year. Bruges is definitely on my list for 2016. Glad you had a wonderful European Vacation!

  12. Thanks Nina! Please do yourself a favour and visit Bruges. It’s by far one of my favourite places in Europe, it almost seems frozen in time – the buildings I mean.

  13. Everything looks so lovely and cozy and festive!! I would love to go to Europe someday in the winter!! I’ve only ever been in the summer.

  14. That sounds like just the most incredible Christmas! I would love to visit Belgium and the surrounding areas that time of year. Looks pretty magical even though the weather wasn’t always the best!

  15. It’s always strange visiting these places during holiday time, and maybe you don’t get to see places like Amsterdam at its best. Sounds like you crammed a lot into a few days though and got to check out some new places. Love the photos!

  16. I need to spend Christmas 2016 in Europe! I’ve never experienced a real Christmas- I’m based in the Middle East where it can never be the same. Love the shot from Amsterdam- it is amazing!

  17. Sorry to hear you did not love new years eve in Amsterdam. But to be honest, I am a 20 something dutch female from Amsterdam, and I hate my city this evening. Well ,not totally, but rather I am somewhere else πŸ˜‰
    Can feel you!

  18. Had my first xmas in EU as well. Still catching up as the way of celebration is different from my home country. Visit Germany next time and enjoy xmas markets. Hehe.

  19. haha glad I’m not the only one! I’ll definitely have to go back another time to experience the city in its finest form!

  20. It really is. I will have to go back to Amsterdam to visit in the spring because I’ve heard it’s like a different city!

  21. I would definitely recommend it Alli, it was beautiful and I was so happy the Christmas markets were still open too!

  22. I did! We don’t celebrate Boxing day, unless it’s celebrating the deals that we’ve found at the stores πŸ˜‰ Also the Christmas markets are usually finished before Christmas but in Europe I found they stayed open until New Years which was nice.

  23. Great trip! I love Amsterdam and less well known places in Europe. I want to visit Belgium and I’m so close but always overlook it. Your photos have put it back up on my quick break list (I live in the UK so could do a long weekend). Thanks for sharing
