Florida, the Sunshine State, is a magical place. I don’t just mean that because it’s home to the original Disney. There’s something about the state that has significant much appeal to Americans and Canadians alike. You can find cheap flights as well as abundant affordable hotels.

It’s not just a state for snowbirds, either. The Sunshine State appeals to all generations. My grandparents have migrated to Florida for as long as I can remember, but my aunt also lives there. Because of my family connections, I have been extremely lucky to able to have travelled to several cities within the state in my childhood.

Orlando

Orlando, Florida is, of course, the most obvious destination — and also the most famous. As the home of Disney and Universal, Orlando is not a city you want to miss. You’re never too old for Disney. My last visit was a couple of years ago, and honestly, I would go back in a heartbeat.

The added bonus with Orlando is that the flights from Toronto are pretty reasonable, and quick. There are also so many different hotels you can choose from in any budget range. I’ve stayed in a different hotel on each trip to Disney and loved them all.

Sarasota

Sarasota holds sentimental value for me because my grandparents’ have a second home here. I spent countless years during my childhood travelling to Sarasota. It’s also where I travelled during my first ever solo trip (I met my aunt there when I landed so I guess that doesn’t really count).

Sarasota actually has some of the best beaches in Florida. During my last visit in February, I got to explore St. Armand’s Circle and was so pleased. This little pocket of town is very close to the beach and has amazing shopping and restaurants. Contrary to what you might think, the circle does not close down early, either, which was a nice change of pace for my sister and I!

Miami

You didn’t think I would mention travelling to Florida without mentioning Miami, did you? While I’ve only visited this crazy city for several hours at a time, it’s enough to get a glimpse of how unique this place really is. I still remember seeing the most bizarre people out on the streets at all hours of the day and night. Miami is a people-watcher’s dream city.

South Beach is definitely where you want to visit if you’re travelling to this particular city. The long stretch of beach is nicely complemented by a number of bars, restaurants and boutique hotels. It’s worth a walk up and down, especially at night.

Key West

Visiting Key West, Florida almost seems as if you’re stepping into another country. The laid-back atmosphere and unique architecture are not something you want to miss. Also, Key West was once was home to one of my favourite writers of all time: Ernest Hemingway. I still can’t believe I never did the tour of his home last time we were there.

There are a lot of cruise ships that dock in Key West, so if you plan on only visiting for a day or two, make sure you look up schedules so you can try to avoid the crowds. You could spend all day just walking around and admiring the architecture and colours of the buildings. This is definitely my favourite Florida city.

No matter where you choose to travel in the Sunshine State, you know you’re bound to have a good time. With endless beaches, amazing shopping and tons of travel deals, there is quite literally something for everyone.
